Massive Level(3) outage

Just weeks after they depeered cogent, Level(3) has had what appears to be a complete outage of their network.

Things do go wrong with maintenances, but this was kind of the mother of all outages, at least as far as a single SFI (settlement free interconnect) provider is concerned (SFI is a more accurate title than the marketing surrounding tier1/2/whatever).

Is more of this to come as providers become more aggressive about depeering and such, or is it going to become less noticeable as more and more small hosts/enterprises/ISPs multihome? In this case, L3 was still up and accepting traffic, it was just going into a black hole, so even multihoming didn’t help some people.
