3ware card goes up in smoke

It didn’t really let the magic blue smoke out, but it might as well have.
It started with a weird error in syslog:

1 Nov 1 21:57:19 <user.crit> XXX /kernel: twe0: AEN: <sbuf integrity check failure>

After contacting 3ware, they suggested that we get a full log from the web interface (3dmd). [...]

Lost and found

So, today we had a 3ware card spectacularly fail. More on that on another post tomorrow.
In the course of trying to recover from it, there was a long fsck that ended up having to put lots of stuff in lost+found. That’s fine, I really can’t expect that it would do more than that [...]

Dell sure does have a lot of hardware problems

A common problem with their, um, less than great MPT device:
Nov 6 01:23:46 XXX /kernel: mpt0: time out on request index = 0×27 sequence = 0×0719a5e1
The machine is now essentially dead, the scsi controller has pretty much locked up.
It’ll recover a bit sometimes, but the machine is never really back in a working [...]

Slowness of whois requests

What’s up with the whois slowness that’s been going on for the past month or two? It’s almost like it’s intentional to stop email harvesting, but often after the initial lookup took forever the following ones are fast — that’s usually a sign of cache hit vs cache miss.
